Punjab Government Earmarks 10 Crore Under Indira Awaas Yojna During Current Financial Year

Chandigarh, April 29, 2016: The Punjab government has earmarked Rs. Ten crore during the year 2016-17 under Indira Awaas Yojna Scheme. This scheme is aimed at providing houses to the members of Scheduled Castes and Non Scheduled Castes free of cost in rural Areas. The Beneficiaries under the scheme are selected from the list of eligible below poverty line household.
Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the Rural Development and Panchayats Department said that the houses under this scheme should normally be built on individual plots in the main habitation of the village, but can also be built on micro-habitat approach or in cluster within a habitation, so as to facilitate the development of infrastructure such as internal roads, drains, drinking water supply and other common facilities. He further said that during the year 2009-10 a grant of Rs. 35000/- per unit was provided in the plain areas for construction of houses and Rs.38500/- in the hilly difficult area for construction of houses which has further been enhanced to Rs.45000/- in the plain areas and Rs. 48500/- in the difficult areas from the year 2010-11. He further said that for conversion of unserviceable Katcha houses into pucca/ semi Pucca houses, the maximum limit has been increased to Rs. 15000 per unit. He also said that all the dwelling units are provided with smokeless chullas and sanitary latrines. He said that the unit cost has been enhanced from Rs.45000/- to Rs. 70,000/- with effect from April 1st, 2013 in plain areas.
He also said that as per the household survey conducted in 2011 as part of Census operation. Out of total 33.15 lac rural families, 7.9% or 2.61 lac are without Pucca houses. Government has covered 1 13,576 beneficiaries with the grant of Rs.37189.28 crore during the last nine years under this scheme.
