PU hosts Public Interaction on Ebola Virus Disease

Chandigarh, February 10, 2015: In association with Department of Microbiology, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh and Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, the Chandigarh Unit of Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI) on Monday organised a public awareness program on Ebola Virus Disease at PU Law Auditorium.

Ebola virus had emerged in 1976 in Zaire, Democratic Republic of Congo and was responsible for many deaths.

Dr. Jagdish Chander, Professor and Head of Department of Microbiology, GMCH-32 told about the origin and current outbreak of Ebola virus disease and contents of the movie ‘Outbreak’ that was screened to make people aware of the infectious flu disease.

After the movie, discussion and questions were taken from public en-large. Various queries about Ebola, Swine flu and Bird flu were answered by Dr. Jagdish.

PU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, appreciated the program and hoped that many such awareness programs would be done by PU in future. This was the first kind of program to generate public awareness through a movie.

Earlier, the program started with the introductory remarks by Prof. Prince Sharma about the activities related to the promotion of Microbiology and other biological sciences carried out by AMI.  He also told about the significance of public awareness programs.

The program was moderated by General Secretary, Dr. Naveen Gupta. A vote of thanks was given by Prof. Praveen Rishi.
