Jalandhar, March 24, 2015: Making aware the young students of Punjab Institute of Technology (PIT) regarding the environment and forest conservation, Punjab Technical University along with Vigyan Parishad Panchnand organised a one-day seminar on ‘Jal Jangal aur Jeewan- Akshay Vikas ki Aur’ here today.

The key speakers for the occasion were Umendra Dutt, Executive Director, Kheti Virasat Mission (KVM) and Dr. Sanjeev Chauhan, Professor of Forestry at Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana.

Before initiating the seminar, a poster-making competition was also held in which the students of the institute made posters related to environment protection.

Speaker Umendra Dutt expressed his views regarding the role of youth in protecting the precious natural gift. He said, “Including environment studies as a mandatory subject in curriculum won’t produce much outputs. Protecting environment shall be into your values, then only any betterment could be brought into saving environment. Today, every developed country has one or the other problem. We shall be thankful enough that we are living in India and it becomes our duty to join hands in saving our surroundings. Water and forest conservation are the two sides of the same coin. Both are inter-dependent and our lives would be stand still if both are unavailable to us.”

On the other side, Dr. Sanjeev Chauhan stressed on recalling and commemorating the days related to environment. He said, “Remembering such days is very essential for youth. In order to save resources for our coming generation, we must start contributing out bit in saving the ecosystem especially water and forests. Water, forest and life is a part of a life-cycle. Tress and humans have an intense relation.”

About organizing this seminar Dr. A P Singh, Dean RIC shared, “We organised this seminar in order to make students aware about the present situation of environment degradation on International Water Day that was on March 22. The key speakers were invited to interact and motivate students so that they too step out and help in protecting the environment. If we adopt philosophy of Dharma, artha, karma and moksha we can achieve sustainable development.  The maximum we would contribute towards nature, the more it will return and more it will be fruitful for the coming generation.”

Later, the prizes of poster making were distributed by the guests. In this, Priya Chander of M.SC Mass Communication bagged first prize followed by Anika Gupta (M. Tech CSE) and Karambir Kaur (M. Tech CSE) secured second and third position respectively. Paramjeet Kaur (M. Tech CSE) and Varinderjit Kaur (MBA) won consolation prizes.
