Ludhiana, September 19, 2016: Prostate gland Awareness programme was organised by Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana. More than­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ 75 patients and their relatives attended the programme.
Programme was held under the supervision of Mr.Vivan Singh Gill, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana. Separate rounds of Interaction were held and a lot of queries regarding Prostate gland problems were resolved. The whole session was followed by question-answer round on various scenarios of daily life.
Giving information regarding Prostate gland Dr Ashish Jindal, Consultant Urologist, Lap and kidney transplant Surgeon, Fortis hospital Ludhiana said, A prostate is a gland found in males which surrounds the urethra that comes from the bladder. It is about the size of a walnut, weighs about 0.4 ounces on average, and is found before the rectum and beneath the urinary bladder. With age (mostly over 50 years) it starts producing urinary symptoms by causing obstruction to bladder outlet. Following are the symptoms caused by enlargement of prostate gland.
Symptoms:
· Hesitency: Taking time to start urination
· Urgency: rushing to bathroom for urination
· Urge wetting: Urine leak before reaching bathroom
· Intermittentcy: Urine coming intermittently
· Poor flow: Thin stream with urine falling near your footsteps
· Straining: Applying force to pass urine
· Incomplete voiding: Sensation that some amount of urine remaining after micturition
· Frequency : Tendency to pass urine again and again
· Nocturnal frequency: Tendency to pass urine again and again during night time
Associated Symptoms:
· Blood in the urine
· Urine retention
· Dysuria
· Recurrent fever
· Swelling of testis
· Swelling in groin region
· Haemorrhoids
· Stone formation in the bladder
Urologist will examine:
· To see for bladder on abdominal examination
· To look for hernia
· To look for swelling in testis
· DRE (Per rectal examination)
Investigations Required
· Urine re,
· Urine c.s
· CBC, RBS, RFT
· S PSA
· USG abd with PVR
· Uroflow
Option’s if S PSA high:
1. It may be high because of prostatitis, ca prostate etc.
2. Patient has to consult urologist.
3. He will examine you.
4. You may require prostate biopsy
Treatment Options:
1. Medical Treatment:
2. If symptoms are mild, patient is younger than 50 years, not fit for surgery.
3. Surgical treatment
4. TURP/ Laser TURP for Benign Prostate Gland
Surgical candidates:
Symptoms are moderate to severe in intensity
Not satisfactory with medical treatment
If these symptoms are also present:
· Blood in the urine
· Recurrent Urine retention
· Dysuria
· Recurrent fever
· Swelling of testis
· Swelling in groin region
· Haemorrhoids
· Stone formation in the bladder
This is an endourological procedure i.e through urine passage blocking prostate is removed.
Generally patient is discharged after 2 days. Patients are advised to take life quietly and to avoid straining or heavy lifting for four weeks after the surgery.
