Chandigarh, June 26, 2015: Punjab Petrol Pump Dealers delegation today called upon the Advisory Committee on Trade and Industrial Affairs headed by Chief Parliamentary Secretaries Mr Saroop Chand Singla and Mr.N.K.Sharma at Punjab Bhawan here and pleaded to rectify variations in taxes on petrol and diesel with respect to adjoining states.
In the presences of MLA Deep Malhotra, Principal Secretary Finance Mr. DP Ready, Commissioner Excise and Taxation Mr. Anurag Verma and Special Principal Secretary to Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Ajay Kumar Mahajan the representatives of Petrol Pump Dealers Association raised the issue of tax variations between Punjab and adjoining states on Petrol and Diesel that encouraging the smuggling of oil from other states to border districts of Punjab. They also pleaded that such activities were causing revenue loss as well as tax evasion.
Mr. Ajay Kumar Mahajan informed in the meeting that a high level meeting of Northern States was held to rationalize present tax regime by implementing a uniform tax structure (UTS) in northern states including New Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and UT Chandigarh with a view to eliminate evasion of taxes and curb smuggling of goods through state borders.
He said that Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Manish Sisodia, Finance Minister Mr. Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Haryana Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu, Himachal Pradesh Finance Minister Parkash Chaudhary and Advisor to Administrator UT Chandigarh accompanied by taxation secretaries from these states were present in the meeting.
He said all Northern States were agreed upon to rationalize present tax regime and a coordination committee had been constituted comprising taxation secretaries of these states.
On the issue of smuggling of oil, Mr. Ready informed that it was also decided to setup a common economic intelligence unit to curb evasion of taxes and smuggling of goods. He said special mobile teams have also been constituted to eliminate this practice besides complaints could be filed on dedicated toll free helpline numbers regarding the smuggling of oil and goods.
