Ludhiana, January 4, 2016: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has inked a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with M/s Kalash Seeds Private Limited, Jalna (Maharashtra). Under this pact, PAU has offered non-exclusive rights to the company to produce and sell the seeds of four varieties/hybrids of vegetable crops developed by the university. These varieties include brinjal hybrid PBH-3, brinjal hybrid PBH-4, muskmelon hybrid MH-27 and onion variety PRO-6.

Mr Avtar Singh Gill, Regional Sales Manager, Kalash Seeds Private Limited described the portfolio of the company. He informed that Kalash Seeds Pvt. Ltd., engaged in development and marketing of varieties of vegetable crops, has a dominating presence in vegetable seed industry in India and is committed to the supply of quality seeds to the farmers.

Appreciating the linkage between PAU and Kalash Seeds Private Limited, Dr R.K. Gumber, Additional Director of Research (Crop Improvement), PAU said that this association would help in large scale seed production of these hybrids, thereby, ensuring better availability of seed to the farmers.

Dr M.S. Dhaliwal, Additional Director of Research (HFS), PAU highlighted that vegetable varieties, developed by PAU, are in great demand among the farmers owing to their better performance. “This linkage with private seed industry would facilitate wider adoption of PAU varieties at farmers’ fields,” he added.

Highlighting the salient features of the hybrids/varieties, Dr A.S. Dhatt, Head, Department of Vegetable Science, PAU, said the brinjal hybrid PBH-3 bears shining purple fruits that are small in size and round/oblong in shape whereas PBH-4 bears purple-black fruits that are medium in size and long in shape. Both these brinjal hybrids are high yielding, early maturing and thornless, he added. Besides their release for the Punjab state, these two hybrids have also been identified for release at the national level under All India Coordinated Research Project, he told. The muskmelon hybrid MH-27, having high fruit yield, is tolerant to wilt and root knot nematodes, he said. Its fruits are round, light yellow with green sutures and netted. The fruits are medium juicy with thick flesh and thus, have long shelf life and are suitable for distant transportation, he added. Dr Dhatt further said the onion variety PRO-6 has deep red bulbs with high yield and good keeping quality.
