PAU PROVIDES INCUBATIONAL FACILITIES TO TURMERIC AND ONION GROWERS

Ludhiana, May 30, 2017: The Food Industry Centre (FIC) under the Department of Food Science and Technology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), provided its incubational facilities to the PAU alumni, Navdeep Bali and Gursharan Singh from G.B.Foods, for processing of 2.5 tonnes of turmeric pickle. Hailing from Rampuraful, Bathinda, both the alumni are successful turmeric growers.

Dr Poonam A. Sachdev, Head, Department of Food Science and Technology, said the processing of turmeric pickle was done for six days with thrust on cleaning, sorting, washing, slicing, mixing, bottling and labeling of product using automated system available at FIC. Another onion grower, Mrs Simarjeet Kaur from Ludhiana also processed onion into onion paste at FIC, she informed. Onion paste was prepared using automated equipments for washing, slicing, grinding, making paste and packaging, she added. Dr Sachdev said the University is providing incubational facilities to the farmers and entrepreneurs of Punjab for giving them additional economic benefits. Both the products were well-prepared keeping in view food safety and hygiene, she told.

The products were processed under the supervision of Rahul Gupta and Karanveer, Associates of Food Science and Technology Department.
