PAU IMPARTS TRAINING IN BEEKEEPING

Ludhiana, November 28, 2017: The Integrated Beekeeping Training Centre (IBDC) of the Department of Entomology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a seven-day 'Beekeeping Training Course' under the aegis of the National Bee Board, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi. A total of 25 trainees (including five women trainees) from six districts participated in the training.

Dr Pardeep K. Chhuneja, Course Director and Head, Department of Entomology, said the present beekeeping training course is endeavored at providing livelihood to the youth of the state and enabling them to obtain social and economic security.

During the training, hands-on-experience was provided on various aspects of beekeeping including seasonal bee management practices; colony multiplication; managing swarming, robbing and queenlessness problems in honey bee colonies; management of bee enemies and diseases; bee flora; role of bees in crop pollination; collection of quality honey and other hive products, their processing and marketing, etc. through lectures and demonstrations. Besides, an exposure visit of the trainees was conducted to beekeeping entrepreneurs and apicultural industry. This was the first training programme organized under IBDC. Advance training in apiculture for progressive beekeepers will be organized by IBDC of PAU from December 6-13,2017.
