Ludhiana, May 23, 2016: The Department of Entomology of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will be organizing the Central Sector Scheme’s 10th Annual Workshop on “Monitoring of Pesticide Residues at National Level” on May 25 and 24th Annual Workshop of “All India Network Project (AINP) on Pesticide Residues” on May 26 and 27. About 150 scientists working in these projects are expected to attend these workshops. Besides, eminent scientists, project directors, coordinators of various research projects, officers from the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine and Storage; National Regulatory Authorities and industry will also participate.
Dr R.S. Gill, Head, Department of Entomology, PAU said detailed deliberations will be held to discuss the issues relating to the presence of pesticide residues in food commodities and the good agricultural practice (GAP)/label claim of pesticides in crops.
Under “Monitoring of Pesticide Residues at National Level,” pesticide residues are monitored in various food and feed commodities moving in trade. These studies help in knowing the frequency and magnitude of pesticide residues in samples of food and feed commodities, collected from different locations in Punjab. The data obtained from these studies is submitted to the concerned authorities at the national level for taking appropriate decision regarding the use of pesticides.
Under “All India Network Project on Pesticide Residues,” dissipation of promising/new pesticides on different crops is studied with a view to derive pre-harvest intervals/waiting periods for the safety of consumers. The data obtained is submitted to the National Regulatory Authorities for fixation of Maximum Residue Limits (MRL’s).
