Ludhiana, August 31, 2018: With the passing of Dr. Livtar Singh Chawla, a distinguished era has ended, but the legacy lives on.
On August 31st, 2018 he passed away peacefully at Dayanand Medical College. An institution he loved and helped develop into a premier national Medical College and Hospital, and where he made lifelong friends.
Dr.Chawla was a very well known and admired personality in the field of Gastroenterology and Medicine. He was the Founder Vice Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Punjab, from July 1998 to December 1999. He was also the former Principal of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, from January 1986 till August 1994.
He was a member of the Medical Council of India, for five years, from 1988 to 1993. He was further nominated by Central Government of India for the term 1995 to 2000 and from 2000 to 2005.
Dr. Chawla was born on September 27, 1934 in Gujranwala. He attended Colony High School in Nangal, followed by Doaba College from 1949 to 1951. He graduated from Amritsar Medical College with MBBS and then MD in 1961. Thereafter, he did his fellowship in England in 1968. As part of his professional life, he visited numerous countries to attend conferences and present papers. In 1992 he received the prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy National Award for Eminent Medical Teacher.
His passion also extended to promoting world peace and promoting women’s rights. He was the National President of the Indian Doctors for Peace and Development. He was the key person in organizing world congress of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) in New Delhi in 2008. He strongly opposed abortion of girls and till his last breath, spoke about it.
Dr. L. S. Chawla was a legendary personality who touched the lives of so many people. His students are now successful doctors, spread all over the world. And yet, Dr. Chawla was an extremely simple man with unfailing dedication and love for the sick and the ailing. Kindness and generosity emanated from his smiling eyes and loving demeanor. His humility touched all and is infused in the family of doctors who came in contact with him. He lived a celebratory, courageous and honest life.
His cremation will be held on 2nd September at 11.00am at Crematorium behind KVM School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana.
