Chandigarh, June 29, 2016: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, Dean University Instruction (DUI), Professor Dinesh Kumar Gupta formally today released the annual Magazine of University School of Open Learning (USOL). The magazine of the USOL derives a special importance in the university, as it is amongst the highly circulated publications in the university. Appreciating the efforts made by USOL in the production of the magazine and its layout, Professor Gupta also talked about the important role of the distance education and distance educators are playing in the society. USOL is amongst very few institutes of distance education in India which brings out its annual magazine for the students.
Prof. Jaspal Kaur Kaang, the Chairperson of USOL and the Patron of the Magazine, who led the team of the editorial board to the DUI, shared that besides three sections, i.e., English, Hindi and Punjabi, the magazine carries a `USOL Special Section’. This section shares some of the important activities undertaken by the USOL during the previous year. Notably, USOL has entered its 45th year of its service to the society with its own logo, which promises reaching out to learners; community with openness in the modern society where learning is the base of success.
Prof Kaang pointed out that the layout of the magazine carries on each page the pictures of students, faculty and staff in action on various events, such as convocation, `on-the-spot’ admission exercise, orientation programme, HUNAR and other extra co-curricular activities which were launched during the last year.
At the meeting with DUI Prof Gupta, Prof Kaang took the opportunity to dwell on the developments in the USOL. She shared that from the academic session 2016-17, the enrolment to USOL shall be online for all its courses which are in ‘semester format’. She also informed the DUI that the USOL, which caters to more than 22000 students, is fast heading towards full computerization of its all pervasive assignments. And soon the magazine will also be put on the internet in e-format.
Professor Gupta extended his wishes to the USOL in its future venture and congratulated Professor Kaang as Patron of the USOL Magazine and to the Chief Editor Professor R.K Mahajan and others editors Professor Parveen Sharda and Professor Neeru.
