Chandigarh, April 15, 2015: A six-member delegation of the Chemistry Department, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh today visited the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to discuss prospects of a long lasting cooperation and collaborations especially by way of sharing and transferring knowledge and technical expertise between the Chemistry departments of AMU and PU.

The novel exchange programme has been initiated by the PU Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof.Arun Kumar Grover and AMU VC Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah for inter-university interaction among students and teachers to promote exchange of ideas of common interest to strengthen research through possible collaboration, infrastructure utilization and common PhD platform.

The six-member delegation, which is on a two-day visit to AMU, has been sent by Chairman, Department of Chemistry, PU Prof. Venugopalan under the leadership of Prof.Rajat Sandhir, who is also the President of Teachers Association of PU, Chandigarh. The other members include Dr. Amandeep Sarova, Dr. Rohit Sharma, Dr. Amarjit Kaur, Renu and Sherry Mittal. During the visit, the team members would be engaged in interactive meetings with students and delivering lectures on various topics.

It may be noted that the PU has consistently occupied the number one position amongst Indian Universities in various ranking surveys including the Times Higher Education (THE) Asian Universities survey, conducted during the past few years.

While interacting with the faculty members of PU, Prof. Mohd. Shakir, Chairman, Department of Chemistry, AMU said that AMU Chemistry department is one of the oldest departments in the University with a rich tradition of high quality research and teaching in analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. He said that the department was established in 1911 under the leadership of noted scientist Prof. H.B. Duncliff.

Prof. Shakir pointed out that the Department of Chemistry has always occupied pivotal position and played a key role in ascertaining the overall status, and national and international ranking of the University. He said that the department was supported by novel programmes like FIST (DST), SAP (DRS-II) and PURSE-II./ (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
