PAMETI Imparts Training In Seed Processing And Handling

Ludhiana: A three-day training programme on `Seed Processing, Handling, Transportation and Quality Control’ concluded at the Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMTEI), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on Wednesday. As many as 20 officials of Indian Farm Forestry Development Co-operative Limited (IFFDC) from the states of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh attended the programme.

Dr S.S. Gill, former Director of Extension Education, PAU, while inaugurating the training programme, motivated the participants to adopt scientific procedures for processing seed. He also urged them to focus on scientific ways to handle and transport seed, and disseminate the same to the farmers.

Dr H.S. Dhaliwal, Director, PAMETI, welcomed all the officials from IFFDC. He highlighted the importance of good quality seed for progressive agriculture.

Dr K.S. Sandhu, Senior Project Manager from IFFDC, apprised the trainees of the functioning of IFFDC. Sessions were held by experts from PAU and various other organizations like PUNSEED, Indian Grain Storage Management and Research Institute (IGMRI), etc. Besides, an official from Punjab Seed Certification Agency discussed the seed certification procedure.

Exposure visits were also organised so that the participants could see the latest machinery and technology that is used in this trade. A visit to University Seed Farm at Naraingarh was conducted to show the trainees, varieties of various cereals and vegetables that are processed and packaged there. In addition, a visit to the farms of Laddowal Seeds and Jarria Seeds were organized to educate the trainees about how the progressive seed producers of Punjab run their ventures.
