Ludhiana, April 20, 2015: A three-day workshop on “Agricultural Commodity Trading” was organised at PAMETI. As many as 19 participants from State Agriculture and Horticulture departments participated in the workshop.

Dr H S Dhaliwal, Director PAMETI encouraged the extension officials to motivate farmers to trade in agricultural commodity futures as they can not only hedge their price risk but can also get higher returns. This will improve farmer’s income and ensure adequate investments in agriculture, he observed.

Experts from the various departments of PAU and private companies interacted with the participants. An orientation lecture on concept of future trading and how online trading is done practically was delivered by Anurag Goyal who heads commodities division of Kotak Commodity Services in Ludhiana. Participants were made aware about the various strategies that farmers can use to hedge their price risk in the future market. Recent innovations in commodities market like Safal market, E-choupal that have been successful in different states of India were also discussed. Dr J.S. Sidhu discussed how market intelligence can be used by farmers to remain competitive by improving their strategic decisions. Kamaljit Singh from Field Fresh made the participants aware about the details of the contract farming being followed by them in Punjab.
