Senior Citizens attend Session on World Elders Day by SPS Apollo Hospitals, Ludhiana.

Ludhiana, October 2, 2014: SPS Apollo Hospitals, Ludhiana observed the World Elders Day by conducted a public awareness programme at Senior Citizen House, Ludhiana. Through this educative and interactive session, the hospital were able to create awareness regarding falls, psychological problems, mental disorders, memory loss, risk factor of stroke and attitude of societies towards the elders. According to Dr Rupinder Singh Bhatia, Senior Consultant, Department of Neurology, SPS Apollo Hospitals, these forums laid special emphasis on awareness, timely treatment and need for immediately rushing to the hospital as an important measure in case of any emergency. The hospital also distributed free information booklets and education material to all presents.

According to Dr. Bhatia, this initiative was taken to understand that demography matters for sustainable development and that population dynamics will shape the key developmental challenges that the world in confronting in the 21st century. If our ambition is to "Build the Future We Want", we must address the population over 60 which is expected to reach 1.4 billion by 2030. Theme for this year is “Leaving No One Behind: Promoting a Society for All”. 

Over 100 members of Senior Citizen association participated in an interactive session. Addressing the patients, Dr. Bhatia also shared the important warning signs of stroke include sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body, sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding. Most patients fail to reach medical centers owing to low awareness regarding the malady. Dr. Bhatia said that, many emergencies situations can be handled timely if efforts should be made to rush patients to the hospital immediately. He further added that timely intervention can prevent damage caused to the mind and body.

Such meetings would be held regularly and will bring together elder members of society, patients, stroke survivors, doctors, rehabilitation specialists and dieticians. The aim of these forums is to spread awareness among all about the value of Senior Citizens in our life. "Older persons make wide-ranging contributions to economic and social development. However, discrimination and social exclusion persist. We must overcome this bias in order to ensure a socially and economically active, secure and healthy ageing population."
