National Level ‘World Wetland Day 2014’ celebrated at Harike (Ferozepur)

Harike(Ferozepur), February 3: A detailed project for over-all development of Harike Wetland- also known as Kari-ke-Pattan – has been sent to the Centre Government, to welcome migratory birds, its long-term management and to develop it as tourist spot, said Manjit Singh Narang, Deputy Commissioner in his address on celebrations of national level Wetland Day.
At a function organised by Science, Technology and Environment Department Punjab in association with the Forest and Environment Ministry, GOI to celebrate national level World Wetland Day, Manjit Singh Narang, during his address saying Harike is the ‘Entry Gate’ for Ferozepur District. For over-all development of Harike Wetland, Rs.14 crore project has been sent to the government. He also invited the common people to come forward for taking care of wetland.
He further said, a tourist route on the pattern of Sultanpur Lodhi, Sri Aamritsar Sahib and Harike Wetland is being prepared to encourage the tourists visiting Punjab. This wetland is spread in three districts, he added.
Earlier, Shashi Shekhar, Additional Secretary Forest and Environment Department, GOI said, the forest department will extend all help for conserving the forests. Stating the necessity of people’s participation in preserving the forests, he said, our next generation should come forward for the purpose.
Dr.Neelam Jairath, Executive Director, Punjab State Science and Technology Council said, there are 26 international level and unknown Wetlands and it is a matter of pleasures for Punjab that three are in Punjab, in which 360 kinds of birds and 60 types of fish of rare and endangered species, are available.
