Ferozepur, February 3, 2014:  Oil is the life blood of the modern world and what would happen if we run out of oil?  It is a big challenge for the researchers all over the world to find the substitute.

The writing is on the wall. Global oil supply can't meet global oil demand forever, necessitating new energy sources and usage practices. Even if technology allowed us to harvest every last drop of oil in the planet, increasing scarcity and rising prices would necessitate widespread change long before we actually ran out of oil.

Converting waste, non-edible oils and algae into bio-diesel will now be possible with the research going on at PU Department of Chemical Engineering & Technology by Rajiv Arora, Ferozepur borne, Assistant Professor at Shaheed Bhagat Singh State Technical Campus, Ferozepur and Research Scholar at PU Department of Chemical Engineering & Technology under the guidance of Prof.Amrit Pal Toor and Prof.R.K.Wanchoo.

Giving this information, Rajiv Arora said, the world will become dry of petro fuels in the coming four-five decades. In view of heavy demand of petro-diesel, the researchers are working world-wide to find the substitute for the same for the survival of auto industry. 

He further said, the bio-diesel from edible oils like sun-flower has already been converted.  Since it is consumable by human-being and is costly, its conversion is not economical.

He said, the research on this project to reduce the cost of bio-diesel is going on for the last two and half year and bio-diesel from waste rice bran and algae have been prepared.  Some production of bio-diesel from algae is already going on in US only and there is lot of research work required in India.

A huge potential is available in the rice producing countries like India, China, and Indonesia etc. and  the unused high free fatty acid rice bran can be converted into bio-diesel, which is currently being used as animal food or fuel.

The main focus is now to reduce the cost of bio-diesel from rice bran and algae by the use of low cost raw-materials and low production cost so that cost of bio-diesel is at par with the petro-diesel, he added.

Rajiv Arora said, “Petroleum products are likely to vanish if we carry on at this rate without any increase for our growing population or aspirations by 2052 and it is big challenge for scientists world-wide to look for the alternative energy sources.
