Jalandhar, September 23, 2015: It is a great concern for the Indian society that near one lakh & forty one thousand people were crashed to death on Indian roads last year. Pulsing the same & carrying forward  Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari’s aim to bring utmost safety on Indian roads & highways, Lovely Professional University hosted  Government of India supported ‘Road to Safety’ workshop at its campus. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) and the Diageo India Foundation to enhance road safety in India.  Hundreds of LPU students were trained about defensive road usage and fast changing traffic scenario by guest faculty from IRTE.

Sharing the road accident incidents, facts and figures, guest faculty from IRTE Dr Arun Pahwa awakened students about understanding to be made and precautions to be taken for being responsible and safe on the roads. The broad workshop on traffic systems served another great purpose of the society by alerting young students against the adverse effects of alcohol consumption in their adolescent & developing age. As per the target of Diageo foundation, Mr Pahwa also focused this national training program on preventing drink driving and educating university students on the dangers of underage drinking. IRTE also hosted a quiz program for participating students and awarded cash prizes to the winning students on behalf of Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.

Participating students Sanchay, Namita, Sapna, Pratick and others shared: “Workshop was very informative and mesmerizing. The instructor was very interactive to reach to our level and trained us in an effective way.” Prior to this workshop, socially awakened LPU student volunteers have also donated 260 units of blood under LPU banner ‘Samarpan’. As one unit of blood saves three lives, LPU students have come forward in saving 780 lives.

LPU Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal congratulated the organizers and the participating students for a society oriented workshop. Mrs Mittal said: “I am sure that our students have been benefitted through this training in all areas of traffic management and road safety. In fact, we are open to other organizations as well to impart such workshops and trainings to youth for ultimate benefit of the society. I personally feel that it is necessary to make students aware of the hazards of the road as well as to develop an attitude of defensive road usage amongst them.”
