Ludhiana, June 8, 2015: “The agricultural production in northwest India is expected to suffer the most due to climate change effects”. This was stated by an eminent soil scientist and former ICAR National Professor, Dr Bijay Singh, while delivering a ‘Special Lecture’ organized by Ludhiana Chapter of Indian Society of Remote Sensing in Department of Soil Science at Punjab Agricultural University. Dr Bijay Singh explained the causes of elevated temperature and carbon dioxide all over the world leading to such climate uncertainty being observed in this region in particular and the world in general. He highlighted the possible strategies involving the agricultural operations which could mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. He emphasized the role of soils in their potential to sequester carbon so as to reduce the increasing levels of this gas in the atmosphere.

Dr S S Kukal, Professor of Soil Conservation and President of Ludhiana Chapter said that high temperature conditions over the last few years has started taking a toll on wheat production in the state.

Dr Raj Setia, Scientist at Punjab Remote Sensing Centre and Secretary of the Ludhiana Chapter informed that Indian Society of Remote Sensing in collaboration with Punjab Agricultural University has been making strong efforts in practicing climate smart agriculture so as to minimize the impact of climate change on agriculture.
