Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Day observed

Ludhiana, May 22, 2017: Department of Gastroenterology with the joint effort of Colitis and Crohn’s Foundation of India organized (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) IBD Day in Dumra Auditorium of DMCH, in which around 70 patients suffering from IBD and their attendants participated and came to know about various aspects of IBD disease.

On this occasion, Secretary of DMCH Managing Society-Sh Prem Kumar Gupta released the ‘Patient Record Dairy’ .This programme includes awareness lecture.

In his lecture, Dr Ajit Sood (Professor & Head of Gastroenterology) said that worldwide, around five million people suffer from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, conditions known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). In most cases, the illness can be kept under control with proper medication, but despite extensive research there is currently no known cure for IBD. It is an initiative to create more attention on the difficulties that IBD patients have to face and needs of people living with IBD. Dr Rajoo Singh Chinna (Professor of Gastronenterology) said that a healthy diet can certainly maintain good nutritional status and and can help manage symptoms along with medications which are recommended to effectively treat IBD. Dr. Sood also explained about the treatment of IBD by the Fecal microbiota threpy ( FMT) . It is the process transfer of fecal bacteria from a healthy individual into a recipient. It is becoming an effective option for patients were Ulcerative Colitis. Department of Gastroenterology is specifically working on study the full potential of FMT for IBD patients and their other disorder.

Giving introduction about Colitis and Crohn’s Foundation of India (CCF), Dr Vandana Midha (Professor of Medicine) said that the organization is a national, academic society by a team of people with special interest in inflammatory bowel disease. Its composition is multidisciplinary ; comprising of physicians, surgeons and other professionals dedicated to assuring high quality patient care by advancing and promoting the science & practice of management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease . Established in 2007, CCF has gone a long way in patient care, IBD Disease Registry and dissemination of knowledge amongst professionals through various conferences and symposia held from time to time.

Other faculty members from Department of Gastroenterology including Dr Varun Mehta, Dr Omesh Goyal and Dr Ramit Mahajan were also present on the occasion and gave answers to various queries asked by the patients and their attendants.

This programme concluded with the circulation of educational booklet ,wrist band & t-Shirts to the patients
