Chandigarh, January 15, 2015 : ”Emeritus Scientist” of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at the Centre for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, Professor A.K.Agarwal has been conferred with the ”Emeritus Fellowship” of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for two years. 

Highly qualified and experienced, superannuated or likely to be superannuated within 6 months, teachers of recognised universities/colleges/institutions are given this fellowship. UGC confer Emeritus Fellowship to provide an opportunity to superannuated teachers of all recognized universities and colleges approved under UGC Act, to pursue active research in their respective field of specialization.

The selection is based on the quality of research and published work contributed by the teacher in his/her service career. The awardee (superannuated) can work under this scheme with a well defined time bound action plan upto the age of 70 years or upto two years (non-extendable) of the award whichever is earlier.

 Agarwal did his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi in 1981 with Professor H.L. Manocha and pursued post doctoral research at the Pennsylvania State University, USA on a National Scholarship for Higher Study Abroad, Ministry of Education & Culture, Government of India, 1984-86 under the supervision of internationally

renowned number theorist Prof. George E. Andrews. Widely travelled Prof. Agarwal has visited and lectured at numerous universities in India and abroad including nine in the USA and four in Canada.

In 2008-09, Agarwal was the President of the Indian Mathematical Society (the oldest and the largest society of mathematics professionals in India) and the President of the Indian Science Congress Association (Math. Sciences) in 2009-10. Presently, he is the President and Editor-in-Chief of the Society for Special Functions and their

Applications and also the Editor-in-Chief of the Lecture Notes Series of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society.

Prior to joining PU as Professor of Mathematics in 1998,  Agarwal was working as Professor & Head, Mathematical Sciences Division, Institute of Advanced Study in Science & Technology, Guwahati.
