Ludhiana, April 5, 2015: First Conference of Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus conference conducted at Ludhiana by Sankara Eye Hospital and Ludhiana Ophthalmological Society.

A unique congregation of ophthalmologists with special interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology (Childhood Blindness) and Strabismus (Squint) was successfully conducted by Sankara Eye Hospital Ludhiana in collaboration with Ludhiana Ophthalmic Society on Sunday in Ludhiana.

India has the world’s largest burden of blindness. Research shows that every fifth blind child across the world is Indian. The economic cost of blindness is billions of dollars, and almost one third of it is due to childhood blindness.

The Midterm Conference of the Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismological Society of India saw over 100 delegates participating. Nationally eminent speakers included DrYogesh Shukla, Jaipur; Dr Mahesh P Shanmugam, Bangalore; Prof Jagat Ram, Chandigarh ;DrShubhangi and Dr Ramesh Murthy from Maharashtra and other eminent faculty from institutions across India shared insights on recent advances and best practices in restoring vision to this vulnerable group.

Strabismus &Pediatric Ophthalmological Society of India (SPOSI) President,Dr. S P Singh, highlighted the values and commitment of the society to cultivate and promote the practice of Strabismology and Paediatric Ophthalmology.

Dr. Madhu Karna, Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Sankara Eye Hospital, Ludhiana and Organising Secretary of the Conference reiterated, “those treating children’s eyes needs special training and expertise and in the current evolving era of modern technology, one has to keep track of the latest developments, watch and learn from the experts.”

DrMadhu expressed, ‘ We at Sankara are proud of the opportunity of holding a National Conference with the Ludhiana Ophthalmological Society giving Ophthalmologists in Punjab a chance to learn about amblyopia (Lazy eye) to strabismus (Squint) and retinal tumors, at their very doorstep.”
