Experts discuss farm engineering, forestry and economics at PAU

Ludhiana, January 23, 2015: The “Research and Extension Specialists’ Workshop for Fruits, Mushroom, Agro-forestry, alongwith Post-harvest Management, Farm Power and Machinery, Food Technology and Agri-Economics” concluded at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. During the concluding session on “Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Forestry and Economics,” the experts deliberated on offset rotavator, orchard spraying and post hole digger, micro irrigation and fertigation, productivity of poplar and eucalyptus clones, nutrient requirement and crop cultivation in poplar plantations, and economics of fruit crops in Punjab.

Dr Gurkanwal Singh, Director of Horticulture, Punjab said that horticulture holds a prominent place in Punjab agriculture as State and Central governments are keen to promote crop diversification. He said that such workshops provide a platform to exchange feedback, and reprioritize research and transfer of technology programmes.

Chairing the concluding session, Dr P.S. Aulakh, Additional Director of Extension Education highlighted that PAU has strong linkages with the State Department of Horticulture. “With the joint efforts of both, Punjab horticulture will grow in right direction,” he stated.

Co-chairing the session, Dr J.S. Dhiman, Additional Director of Research (Natural Resource and Plant Health Management) said that the feedback received from field functionaries of horticulture department will be passed on to the researchers so that research is carried out in the needed direction i.e. towards the horticultural problems.

Earlier, the participants visited Punjab Horticultural Post-harvest Technology Centre, farm power and machinery research farm, mushroom farm and orchards at PAU. The experts explained about Kinnow waxing and wrapping, fruit ripening chamber, drip irrigation and fertigation in different fruits, less seeded Kinnow, rejuvenation of senile orchards of mango, state-of-art facilities for mushroom production and machinery for horticultural crops.
