Ludhiana, April 6, 2017: Gastrointestinal infections are the leading cause of morbidity throughout the world, remarked Dean Academics-Dr Rajoo Singh (Professor of Gastroenterology) who has been elected as President of Gastrointestinal Infection Society of India.

In his message, Dr Chhina further said that Gastrointestinal infections are viral, bacterial or parasitic infections that cause gastroenteritis Studies have shown that Diarrhea alone kills more children In India than any other disease. The most important gastrointestinal (GI) pathogens that cause acute diarrhea include Campylobacter jejuni/coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica, Vibrio cholerae, Clostridium difficile, rotaviruses, noroviruses, and Entamoeba histolytica.
Dr Chhina advised that washing your hands properly with soap and water is one of the major preventive measure s to avoid catching infections from the people around you.

Other safety precautions suggested by Dr Chhina to keep away from acquiring gastrointestinal infection include

Ø Keeping your kitchen consistently clean

Ø Washing your hands properly with soap and water before eating any kind of food

Ø Keep the surroundings clean

Ø Do not share towels and utensils with other household members, if they are infected.

Ø Take adequate rest incase of illness

Ø Ensure that the drinking water is properly filtered and boiled or treated with UV.

Ø Avoid eating food at roadside stalls or places where there is an unknown water source.

Ø Do not consume pre-cut fruits sold on the streets.

Secretary of DMCH Managing Society-Sh Prem Kumar Gupta congratulated Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina for being elected as President of Gastrointestinal Infection Society of India.

Principal Dr Sandeep Puri said that there are around fourty one infections that are very importance cause of illness and he expressed hope that with Dr Chhina taking over as President of this society, the society will do a lot to promote awareness among general public to adopt precautionary medicine to avoid gastrointestinal infections.
