Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University celebrates International AIDS Day

Chandigarh December 1, 2016: Department of Life Long Learning and Extension (DLLL&E), Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh today celebrated International AIDS Day by organizing HIV/AIDS awareness campaign at Government Model High School, Sector 12, PGI, Chandigarh.

As many as 120 students from class IX & X from the school attended the celebration.

Chairperson of the DLLL&E, PU, Mrs Renu Gandhi said that one should live in Maryada/Self control that would help adolescent to prevent HIV but also give them to lead a meaningful life and increase their self confidence. She expressed that the adolescent should have knowledge about HIV i.e. it is a sexually transmitted disease, during blood transfusion, HIV infected needle & syringes & from mother to child.

Mrs Renu Gandhi further added that education and awareness would help the student for taking informed decisions in relation to HIV because 50 percent of the HIV infected patients are adolescents and these types of information may give them an emotional security for prevention of HIV.

While inaugurating the program the Principal of School, Mrs. Amita Khanna highlighted the differences between HIV and AIDS. She said that HIV itself is not a disease but a virus. AIDS is a syndrome of multiple diseases a person can have because of HIV.
