Department of Botany, DAV College celebrates World Forestry Day

Jalandhar, March 21, 2015: Department of Botany, DAV College, Jalandhar celebrated World Forestry Day on Saturday by planting various tree species with great fervor. This day commemorates contribution and value of forests. The theme of the 2015 International Day of Forests (IDF) is Forests-Climate-Change, chosen purposely to highlight the ways in which forests and climate change are linked and to rally global support for greater action and change. Principal, Dr. B.B. Sharma; Dr. Renu Bhardwaj, Dean Controller Exam, GNDU; Dr. Komal Arora, Head of Botany Department, Prof. Renuka chopra, prof SK Midda faculty members of Botany Department and students of B.Sc III (Medical) did symbolic planting of different tree species of Poplar, Silver Oak, Jacranda and Amaltas in the area adjoining Girls Hostel.

Thereafter, the celebration continued with inaugural ceremony of the DBT sponsored workshop titled Photosynthesis Measurement through IRGA under DBT Star College Scheme of Govt.of India for Promotion of Basic Sciences. The workshop was aimed to provide a forum for serious scientific discussion and deliberation to develop projections on the topic of Photosynthesis Measurement. The function started with the Lamp lighting ceremony seeking the blessings of Maa Saraswati. Stage coordinator Ms. Kanika Dua extended a warm welcome to dignitaries, faculty and all participants. She gave a brief introduction of DAV College to chief guest and participants. Head of Botany Department, Dr. Komal Arora, staff members and Secretary- Kashyap Biological Society Sushmita Kapur extended floral Welcome to Prof. (Mrs.) Renu Bhardwaj, GNDU, Amritsar. Addressing the students, Principal Dr. B.B. Sharma said, "Organising Workshops for inculcating the research temperament in our students is a commendable effort of Botany Department. He applauded the participation of BSc (Medical) students with great zeal.  Faculty members of DAV College who were present at the workshop included vice principals Prof. P.K. Kapoor, Prof. Jeevan Asha, Dr. Rajiv Sharma, Prof. Renuka Chopra and others.

The workshop was divided in two sessions. In first session Prof. Bhardwaj delivered a talk on “Photosynthesis and its Measurement” which was further corroborated with field observations using the equipment Infra-red gas Analyzer (IRGA) in second session. The field demo of various parameters related to photosynthesis were demonstrated by two research scholars of Dr. Bhardwaj. Delegates satisfied their queries about the mechanism and handling of equipment IRGA from resource person in general discussion session.

Lastly, in the valedictory ceremony of workshop Prof. Renu Bhardwaj was honoured by college insignia by Dr. B.B. Sharma and Dr. Komal Arora. All delegates were presented with certificate of participation. At the end, Dr. Arora thanked resource person, organisers – Kanika Dua, Meenakshi Sharma, Swati Chawalia and Rakesh Kumar, non-teaching faculty members of Botany Department and students for making this event a grand success.
