Chandigarh, July 24, 2015: Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) institutions and University of Nottingham (UoN), UK have agreed to work on various key areas like IT and Data Management, Public Health & Environment, Utility Services Management and Electricity and Renewable Energy Sources to improve the quality of life in Smart Cities. 
The decision was taken at a meeting of CRIKC institutes and UoN representatives at ICSSR conference room at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh. The meeting discussed potential Research Collaborations on the theme of “Smart cities and Urban Development”. CRIKC was formed by leading institutions of higher education and research in the Chandigarh region to foster and sustain close academic alliances and to facilitate innovation & knowledge creation.

Grover; Director PEC, Prof. Manoj K Arora; UoN Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), Prof. Michele Clarke; Head-Asia Business Centre at UoN, Mr. Jason Feehily; Country Advisor for India to UoN, Ms. Varrtika T.Mudaliar; Prof. Uma Batra; Prof. Siby John; Prof. Umesh Sharma; Prof. Tarlochan Kaur; Prof. Arun Singh; Prof. Rajesh Bhatia; Prof. Renu Vig; Dean, FBMC, Prof. Keshav Malhotra; Director, CIPP Prof. S.K. Soni; Prof. Manoj K. Sharma; Prof. M.M. Gupta and Prof. R. Tewari participated in the meeting.
The two sides agreed to form Joint group, which would work as a Cohesive and Integrated team for capacity building in various areas. The Joint group would also work on Joint research Proposals for seeking funding from various national and international agencies. 
During the meeting, both sides agreed to work on IT and Data Management in E-governance, Smart Sensors Networks, Vehicular Area Networks, Healthcare Data Management, information Retrieval and Data cleaning & Analytics. 
In Public Health & Environment, the two sides would work on Municipal Solid Waste Management, Hospital Waste Management, Biomedical Waste Management, Plastic and Water Bottle waste management and Generation of Bio fuels and Bio gas from the waste.
In Utility Services Management, the two sides would work on Water Management 24X 7, Electricity Management, Transportation System, Patient Management in Hospitals and Construction Materials.
In Electricity and Renewable Energy Group, the two sides would work on 24 X 7 Green Energy, Smart Grids, Micro Grids, Electricity Generation from Hybrid, Renewable sources, Electricity Integration, storage and automation & distribution Earlier, in his opening remarks, PU VC Prof Grover informed the participants about evolution of CRICK in 2012. He stated that main goal is to bring together expertise of different institutes to work on different solutions for main challenges faced by people in this region using limited resources. 
PEC Director, Prof Manoj Arora briefed the participants about the initiatives taken by him in this regard. He informed that after communication received from Prof Michelle in May 2015 about Smart City initiative, a small group having representatives from
different institutes was formed on the subject. 
Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), UoN, Prof. Michele Clarke stated that their main focus is to establish joint centres in smart cities, which can work in the direction of smart urbanisation. 
Prof. Manoj Arora  stated that Government of India is planning to make improvement in the quality of life based on four pillars of smart city viz. Physical Infrastructure (urban Mobility, Utility Services, Energy), Social infrastructure, Institutional Infrastructure, Economic Infrastructure. He further explained criteria used by Government of India is to pick 100 smart cities with certain preconditions which they need to meet.
