Ludhiana, January 12, 2014: The Communist Party of India (CPI) District Ludhiana unit has demanded arrest of the culprits who attempted to allegedly kidnap former DGP Prisons Shashi Kant who is spearheading the movement against drug smuggling in the state being carried out under the patronage of high ups in the government. This attempt has come in the wake of allegations by international drug smuggler Jagdish Bhola who has blamed punjab minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia of patronising the drug racket in Punjab.
The CPI held a demonstration at railway station from where rally was taken to Clock Tower Ludhiana and has demanded CBI probe into these allegations. “Our state is reeling under the menace of drugs with lakhs of youth ruining their lives as a result”, said Kartar Singh Bowani, Secretary, CPI, District Ludhiana, Dr Arun Mitra and D P Maur – Assistant Secretaries, Ramesh Rattan – Ludhiana City Secretary and O P Mehta said that without political patronage drug business cannot sustain.
They added the party warned that drug mafia becoming powerful in the state which is a serious threat to democracy and human resource development. This is also one of the major causes of spurt in crime in the state. There is urgent need to not just catch the small fries but the big fish need to be brought to book as per law of the land. “In this connection it would be appropriate for Majithia to resign on moral grounds and cooperate in the probe”, they said, adding the government should ensure security to Shashi Kant.
