CME on current role of surgical oncologists held

Chandigarh, September 8, 2018: As many as 50 doctors attended a continue medical education (CME) on “current role of surgical oncologists in surgical management” at a hotel here on Friday night. The CME was organized by Ivy Hospital, Mohali in association with Chandigarh Surgical Society. The main objective of CME was to foster collaboration and share best practices among Advanced Practice Providers (APP) working in surgical oncology by providing an educational forum that focuses on the latest advances in surgical management of solid tumors and the role of APP in clinical practice. While speaking on ‘Recent Advances in Surgical Oncology’, Dr Vijay Bansal , MS surgical oncology said that nowadays , during cancer treatment, sometimes side-affects of the treatment would force patients to avoid proper treatment, however with recent advances in surgical oncology, the side-effects are less. In present days, we preserve the structure and function of organs so that patients can live good life after treatment and cure. Moreover now cancer surgery can be performed laparoscopically i.e without any cut on abdomen or chest, said Dr Bansal adding with very good chemotherapy drugs and targeted agent and advanced radiotherapy, result of treatment has also increased. The CME also provided APP learners a broad overview of surgical oncology topics, including over 30 lectures on solid tumor disease-specific topics from head-to-toe, as well as peri-operative management and APP professional roles and leadership. Additional highlights include several hands-on interactive workshops, such as beginner and intermediate suturing, imaging, and common hospital-based procedures. Dr Jatin Sarin, DM Oncology described recent advances in the surgical management of solid tumors originating from the following organ and/or disease sites: brain, spine, oropharynx, thyroid, lung, breast, esophagus, colon, rectum, anus, liver, pancreas, appendix, prostate, kidney, bladder, ovary, skin, and bones . The speakers also demonstrated and performed common hospital-based procedures, including suturing, wound care, lumbar punctures, central line placement, intraosseous access, and management of various catheters utilized in the perioperative setting.
