Center approves to setup IIM at Amritsar-Harsimrat Badal

Chandigarh, June 24, 2015: The Union Government on the recommendation of site selection committee for establishment of IIM at Amritsar today approved to setup this prestigious management institute on the proposed area of 60 acres of land pertaining to villages Nijjarpura and Rakh Jhita in Amritsar District.

Disclosing this Union Food Processing Industry Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal today said the site selection committee has recommended this site comprising 60 acres being appropriate for setting up of proposed IIM. As per the site plan, the committee has also recommended that floor area ratio (FAR) for the institute could be enhanced further, as there was no constraint for future expansion for provisioning of facilities for IIM.

The Amritsar Development Authority (ADA) has offered to construct approach road to the proposed campus and transfer the required land to IIM authority within two weeks.

Mentionably, site selection committee had visited the temporary campus at Punjab Institute of Technology (PIT) Amritsar and recommended that this institute could start its academic session from this year as PIT had already agreed to provide a part of its building for the same. However, the admission procedure in this institute would be strictly as per CAT exam rankings.

It is pertinent to mention here that Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had announced in the Union Budget 2014-15 to setup new IIM in Punjab. The IIM Amritsar would help the students not just from Punjab but also from Chandigarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and other neighbouring states.

The Committee comprising C. Roul Principal Secretary Higher Education Punjab, Shailendra Kumar Director Management from MHRD, Prof. Kulbhushan  Balooni  Director  Incharge IIM Kozikode and P.L.Gupta, XEN CPWD besides officers from Punjab has approved this site.
