APPOINTMENT: Justice JS Sekhon appointed as Lokpal of Punjab

Chandigarh, November 9, 2012: The Punjab government today appointed former Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Jai Singh Sekhon as Lokpal of the state.  

Disclosing this here today, a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said that on the advice of the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil approved the appointment of Justice Sekhon as Lokpal and issued orders this evening. The proposal regarding the appointment of Justice Sekhon as Lokpal was mooted by the Punjab Chief Minister after due deliberations with the Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court and Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha as mandatory under section 4 of the Punjab Lokpal Act.

It may be recalled that Justice Sekhon-an eminent jurist and legal luminary served in several capacities during his illustrious career as Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Member of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission, Chief Commissioner Gurdwara Elections Commission. Justice Sekhon was also nominated as a member of the Haryana Jail Reforms Commission. He started his career as a practicing lawyer at District & Sessions Court, Ferozpur. Before his elevation as judge of Punjab & Haryana High Court, he also served as District & Sessions Judge of several districts in Punjab.
