All Punjab Thalassemia Patient’s/Parents Meet held in Ludhiana
Ludhiana, November 27, 2018: All Punjab Thalassemia Patient’s/Parents Meet was held in the Auditorium, Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana which was well attended by thalassemic children and their parents. The main purpose of the meet was to make patients and parents aware regarding various aspects of thalassemia and its management said Dr Shruti Kakkar (Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Incharge Thalassemia Day Care Centre, DMCH). She further said that we wish to involve our patients in their healthcare decision making that will result in improved outcomes and better quality of life. The meet was formally inaugurated by the chief guest-Dr Sukhvinder Singh, Joint Director, Blood Transfusion Society, Punjab , Guest of honor Dr Sukhdeep Kaur (State Nodal Officer, RBSK), Dr Sandeep Puri (Principal, DMCH) and Dr Puneet A Pooni (HOD, Department of Pediatrics). In his address to the audience, Dr Sukhvinder Singh gave assurance that the State Government is committed to support patients with Thalassemia and is coming up with plans to increase awareness about the disease so as to make Punjab Thalassemia free. Punjab Thalassemics' Welfare Society (PTWS) conferred the award of ‘Friend of Thalassemia’ to Dr Sukhvinder Singh for his outstanding services and devotion towards the cause of thalassemia. The meet also had scientific talks by experts including Dr Shruti Kakkar , Dr Amarjit Kaur (Professor & Head of Transfusion Medicine, DMCH), Dr Geetanjali Jindal, Dr Priyanka Gupta and Dr Suvir Singh. The meet was also attended by members of Thalassemia International Federation (TIF) Dr Michael Angastiniotis (MedicalAdvisor, Thalassemia International Federation) and Dr Mohammed Naveed (Consultant Geneticist,UAE), who assured the patients that TIF will lend every possible support in improving thalassemic services in the state of Punjab. Dr Sukhdeep Kaur said she was extremely pleased to meet the patients with thalassemia and various NGOs working in the field and assured that her department will try to solve all the problems encountered by them.
