49th Punjab State Shooting Championship concludes

Prize distribution ceremony of 49th Punjab State Shooting Championship being held at the PAP grounds at Jalandhar on Friday.

Jalandhar, August 29, 2014: Punjab today established its position as the premier shooting State in the country by conducting the  State shooting championship here which witnessed overwhelming participation and a record Rs 32 lakh prize money disbursal.

Presiding over the prize distribution ceremony of 49th Punjab State Shooting Championship at the PAP grounds here, State Revenue minister and Punjab Rifle Shooting Association (PRSA) President Bikram Singh Majithia said while his first target of encouraging shooting as a sporting discipline and giving shooters their due had been achieved, he would now like to take Shooting in Punjab to the next level by creating world class facilities for the shooters.

 Majithia said it was heartening that 625 shooters had competed for honors in 76 events in the championship which had to be extended to accommodate the unprecedented response from the participants. "Much fresh talent which will distinguish itself in the days ahead has been discovered today", he added.

Listing the help extended to shooting by the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Majithia disclosed that the State government had released Rs. 5.20 crore for construction of a 10 mt indoor air rifle (AC) shooting range at Mohali, construction of complete trap range including 15 machines at Talwara and Ludhiana, construction of complete combined trap/skeet range and 10 meter indoor air rifle range at Amritsar and construction of complete combined trap/skeet range at Bathinda.

The PRSA president said the Badal village shooting range which had been set up at the cost of Rs. 1 crore was considered the best range of the country in its class. He said besides this a shooting academy had also been established at Badal. He said shooters who had excelled in the international arena including  Ronjan Sodhi, Avneet Sidhu,Manav  Sandhu and Harveen Sarao had been appointed as DSPs.  

Majithia said to give an impetus to the sport; an advisory committee comprising prominent shooting personalities was being constituted for PRSA and announced the nomination of Raja KS Sidhu as Advisor to the President PRSA. He also nominated  Pawanpreet Singh Dhillon as Chairman PRSA and  Parminder Singh Brar as Vice President & Office Incharge PRSA. He also announced to start a comprehensive website of PRSA.

 He said for the first time ever a cash prize of Rs 32 lakh had been disbursed to medalists in a State level shooting championship.He said gold; silver and bronze medalists in 76 events had been given Rs. 21,000, Rs. 14,000 and Rs. 7,000 respectively. He said earlier last week this concept had also been introduced in the State Inter-school shooting championship in which prize money of Rs. 7.22 lakh was disbursed to the medalists.
