300 take part in Max Hospital anti –obesity walkathon

Mohali, February 8, 2014: As many as 300 people including senior citizens, doctors, nurses and staff of Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Mohali participated in an anti-obesity walkathon here this morning. The walkathon was conducted by MSSH, Mohali in association with Senior Citizen Association, Mohali. The walk was symbolic and demonstrated the concept of ‘Flab is bad- ability of shedding  lot of weight by walking’.
The walkathon was flagged-off from MSSH, Mohali by Dr Ashutosh Sood, GM-Operations, Dr NM Gupta, Principal Consultant, General Surgery , Dr Manmohan Bedi, Senior Consultant, GI Surgery  and Shivani Gulati, Senior Clinical Nutritionist & Weight Management Specialist at MSSH, Mohali.
Carrying placards of ‘Time to start is now, are you too big for comfort’, ‘Reclaim your life & your fitness’, ‘Have you been losing out on life’, the participants en-route informed the passersby about how they could prevent obesity by walking.
The walkathon was followed by a Health Seminar at the hospital auditorium, where medical specialists and senior clinicians delivered health talks on weight loss and diet, besides conducting Body Mass Index calculations.
Speaking at Seminar, Dr Bedi said that based on 2007 National Health Family Survey data, 30.3 per cent of males and 37.5 per cent females were obese in Punjab. Traditionally known for malnutrition, Indians were now exhibited unique features of obesity like excess body fat, abdominal adiposity, increased subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat and deposition of fat in ectopic sites such as liver, muscle, and others. The percentage of obese women was highest in Punjab with nearly 30%. Due to the long-term consequences, the cost burden of obesity on the health care system was enormous, pointed out Dr Bedi.
Dr NM Gupta said that walking helped to burn those unwanted pounds in an effective manner. To lose weight one has to burn off more than he or she eat, or just reduced the calorie intake. If hectic work schedule did not permit time, then simply divide your walking workout into two or even three daily.
Meanwhile Dr Bedi also gave information on Bariatric Surgery (BS) at seminar. He said that BS included a variety of procedures performed on people who were unable to lose weight through dieting. Weight reduction surgery helped a person change his food behaviour by giving early satiety after a small meal and providing a prolonged feeling of fullness so that he could adhere to his dietary control.
During occasions, Ms Gulati gave tips on healthy diet and nutrition. She said one should concentrate on a nutritious diet based on the body mass index.
