The 23rd edition of Wital See Purewal Khed Mela (Purewal Sports Festival) being held at Hakimpur on Saturday.  

Hakimpur, (Banga), January 8, 2014: The 23rd edition of Wital See Purewal Khed Mela (Purewal Sports Festival) was inaugurated by IG Jalandhar  Surinder Singh Sodhi today here at Hakimpur.  

Gurjit Singh Purewal, Kultar Singh Purewal, Balwinder Kaur Purewal, Makan Singh Purewal were present on the inauguration. The two-day event is being held at Jagatpur Stadium at Hakimpur, Nawan Shehar district. The first day began with women's short jump contest and men's wrestling, and kabaddi matches. The rural sports festival is organised by Canada-based Purewal family.
Khed Mela is one of its kind rural sports festival which is organised to promote popular rural sports such as Kabaddi, Wrestling, Athletics, Weightlifting, Body Building, etc. Drawing talent from various parts of the country, this event is being pitted as the largest rural sports festival in Asia. It is expected to draw an audience of over 1 lakh people from across the country as well as spectators from Canada, United Kingdom, USA and Australia who gather every year to witness this rural sporting extravaganza.
Announcing the launch of Khed Mela,  Jyoti Narain, Executive Director, Wital See Marketing Limited said, “Some of our most spectacular sporting stars have emerged from the country side. This Khed Mela is our way of reaching out to as well encouraging that hidden talent. We hope that one of the winners from this sporting carnival will go on to make the nation proud.”
Each sporting activity has separate categories for male and female athletes and carries reward money which runs into lakhs. “This event is also our way of monetarily incentivizing budding talent so that they do not suffer because of financial constraints. Many of these athletes could have brought us medals at Olympics if they had the right facilities and training”, adds Narain.
Besides sporting activities, this Mela will also witness a number of cultural activities which showcase the ethos of the state of Punjab.
