Ludhiana, February 4, 2014: World Cancer Day is initiated by Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) since 2008 and takes place every year on 4 February. Its aim is to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer, and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease.“Debunk the myths” is the theme of 2014 World Cancer Day, which advocates people to dispel some damaging myths and misconceptions about cancer.   
“It has been found that In India an estimated 2 to 2.5 million suffer from Cancer. To add to this number around 0.7 million new cases are reported every year from which nearly half of them die. It is also known that two-third of the new cancer patients is presented in an incurable stage at the time of diagnosis. Also, reports show that more than 60% of these affected patients are in the prime of their life aged between 35 to 65 years.” Said Dr. Gautam Goyal Consultant medical Oncologist at SPS Apollo Hospitals Ludhiana.
“Awareness is the first step to combat Cancer. Taking proactive measures is an absolute necessity to ensure that the resulting medication is effective enough. Education about cancer also helps people to be more aware about the various myths so that we do not continue fearing cancer but face it strongly. As a responsible healthcare provider, we initiate community driven campaigns and help people understand and burst the stigma associated with the word ‘cancer”, said, Dr. Ritesh Pruthi, consultant Surgical Oncologist & Robotic Surgeon, SPS Apollo Hospitals Ludhiana.
On World Cancer Day Oncology department SPS Apollo hospitals organises different Cancer awareness Programs in rural areas in association with the local Panchayats and Gurudwara   Committees
-          Health awareness talk was conducted in village Modheke more than 150 people attended.
-          Village Khakrana more than 80 persons with sarpanch attended the programme.
