Ludhiana, May 30, 2015: Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU), Ludhiana on Saturday organised a Workshop on “Improving Weld Quality & Productivity”. The workshop was attended by more than 70 Senior Staff and Representatives of Industry including HODs, Production, Quality, Maintenance Engineers and Weld Shop Personnel from different parts of Northern India relating to metal welding & fabrication industry.
Sh. Avtar Singh, President of the Chamber mentioned in his welcome address that the Chamber’s endeavor is to make Ludhiana Industries a World Class in terms of Quality, Productivity & Cost. He narrated that to achieve this CICU has been regularly conducting many such workshops, seminars, conferences and exhibitions etc for the up-gradation of productivity, quality, human resource, environment protection, cost reduction and export promotion etc for the benefit of industry of Punjab.
He said that this program will enlighten the participants regarding optimization and utilization of resources and training/skilling the workforce, which is necessary for achieving quality standards for competing national and international markets.
The interesting and thought provoking sessions were conducted by Dr. Amandeep Singh Sahi, who is doctorate (Phd) in Welding Technology from IIT, Delhi. He has more than 20 years experience in Research & Development of Welding Technologies and published many research papers on improvement of welding processes and equipments. He is working as Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology (SLIET-Deemed University).
The training sessions included various characteristics and essentials of metal welded joints, concepts of Preheating, Root pass, Inter-pass temperature , Multi-pass welding, Post weld heat treatments, following of safe welding practices without losing productivity, weld ability issues of different materials used in different welded fabrications, different types of weld joints, weld defects, the challenges and solutions, residual stress, distortion, its causes, preventions and control, mechanical evaluation of welded joints, use of robotics & automation in welding processes for productivity, quality and cost reduction etc Application of latest techniques for higher productivity, efficiency, equipment care, reducing defects/distortions and testing techniques for raw materials and finished products as well as environmental problems and solutions relating to welding processes. Dos and don’ts prior to, during and after welding process for excellent results. The last session was related to detailed discussions, question & answer session along with feedback by the participants.
Sh. Upkar Singh Ahuja, General Secretary CICU discussed with the participants that there is an urgent and immediate need of application of theoretical knowledge of welding processes to the practical day to day work. If implemented effectively it will definitely improve the quality, productivity and reduce costs for the welded/fabricated products. He expressed his thanks to Dr. Amandeep Singh Sahi for sparing his valuable time to enlighten the participants with deep and vast knowledge and rich experience on the subject of welding techniques and processes for their benefit.
He also thanked the participants for taking keen interest in the workshop and sharing their difficulties and problems with the learned faculty to clear their doubts. He further advised the participants to apply this knowledge in their respective units.
