Walkathon- On the occasion of World Diabetes Day

A  ‘Walkathon’ being organised on the occasion of World Diabetes Day at Ludhiana on Friday. 

Ludhiana, November 14, 2014: Sankara Eye Hospital, Ludhiana joined hands with Dr Rakesh Goyal consultant Endocrinologist of The Endocrine Clinic and Hotel Gulmor Ludhiana to organise a  ‘Walkathon’ on  Friday, on the occasion of World Diabetes Day.

The main objective of conducting Walkathon on World Diabetes Day is to make the general public more aware on the aspect of diabetes & also its effect on eyes and eye sight causing Diabetic Retinopathy, Cataract and Glaucoma as this normally leads to preventable blindness.

The Walkathon was flagged off by ACP traffic police Dr. Richa Agnihotriwho had gracefully accepted to be the chief guest for the event. The total distance covered during the walk was approximate 2 kms and total 100 people participated in the walkathon. The commencing point was Silver Arc Mall via Bhai Bala Chowk and Bharat Nagar Chowk and culminated at Hotel Gulmor Ludhiana. The Endocrine Clinic did free diabetic check-up and educated people about the disease. Optometry students enthusiastically participated in the event. They delivered their messages through hand written posters which had been prepared by students themselves. Hotel Gulmor Ludhiana was the official partner for food and beverages.

Dr. Anamica AhujaUnit Head (Vision Sankara) from Sankara Eye Hospital highlighted the importance of eye care and preventable check-ups to help prevent vision loss and blindness.She also said, individuals with diabetes are more likely to develop cataracts at a younger age and are twice as likely to develop glaucoma as are non-diabetics and the primary vision problem caused by diabetes is diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. Rakesh Goyal Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist of ‘The endocrine Clinic’ said thatDiabetes is one of the major health and development challenges of the 21st century. There are currently 371 million people living with diabetes and another 280 million are at high risk of developing the disease. Hence it is important to educate masses about diabetes and its related complications to fight this silent killer.

Managing Director of Hotel Gulmor Ludhiana said, “We are thankful to Sankara Eye hospital to associate with us in the diabetic and blindness prevention awareness walkathon and to give a voice to our collective commitment towards eye health. It’s important that people realize that timely intervention can often prevent vision impairment both in short and long term.”
