Punjab Government shall learn from big states, to avoid the bifurcation of PTU; Educationists assure the decision would roll back in coming future
If experts are to be believed then Punjab Government may roll back the decision of creating second state technical university in Bathinda, in near future. They show their thumbs down on the decision made and advise Punjab Government to learn from bigger states such as Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, where the decisions of bifurcation didn’t prove fruitful earlier. According to information available with cityairnews.com one of the most significant of all reforms in the higher education sector in Tamil Nadu in 2012 was the merger of Anna Universities of Technology with the parent University in Chennai. To date back, Anna University a Tamil Nadu state Government Technical University was bifurcated in Feb 2007 into six universities namely Anna University Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Chennai; Anna University of Technology Tiruchirapalli; Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore; Anna University of Technology, Madurai. In the year 2012, state government had to roll back its decision by merging all six universities into one single affiliating university.
Not only this, another renowned case of the split of Uttar Pradesh Technical University too exists. Established in the year 2000, it got bifurcated into Mahamaya Technical University and Gautam Buddha Technical University on May 1, 2010. UP Government had to roll back its decision just within three years and on 5th January 2013, it again got merged into 2 universities into UPTU. The decision was roll back due to the unfeasible working of it in such a huge state of having more than 75 districts.
Educations raise questions like If UPTU split didn’t work, then how two universities in one state of just 21 districts could be feasible? The time may come when government would step back to its decision that has been made today, believes experts.
