New Delhi, January 10, 2016 Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will flag off “Road Safety Walk”’ from India gate in New Delhi tomorrow to kick start the 27th road Safety week to begin tomorrow. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will be present on the occasion.
The weeklong National Road Safety Week will begin tomorrow January 11-17 across the nation. It is observed every year in the month of January to  generate awareness among public about road safety. This year the road safety week will be dedicated on theme ‘road safety time for action’ and under this programme, strict compliance of traffic rule would be ensured by creating awareness among people. Besides, encouraging motorists to inculcate the habit of wearing helmet, pedestrians will also be suggested to follow traffic rules while moving on roads.
As part of the Road Safety week International Road Federation (IRF)  India Chapter  along with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is jointly organising a  two seminar on the theme  “Road Safety-Time for Action’” on January 14 & 15, 2016 .
The road safety experts  attending the  seminar from various parts of the country to be inaugurated by Union Secretary Ministery of Road Transport and Highways Sanjay Mitra will be discussing the status of safe roads and  mobility in the country and finding ways and means to reduce fatal road accidents including  road safety management, safer roads and mobility, safer vehicles, safer road users and post-crash response.
“With 80 per cent of all road deaths worldwide estimated in low income countries , India leads the world inroad accident deaths, with around 1,38,000 people being killed each year. India accounts for 10 % of global road accident deaths . Safer roads and mobility is one of the five pillars of the UN Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. The pillar emphasizes the need to raise the inherent safety and protective quality of road networks for the benefit of all road users.” Said Mr K.K.Kapila, Chairman, International Road Federation (IRF).
“Some of the initiatives for safer mobility to be discussed will include identifying  hazardous road locations (black Spots )  or sections where excessive numbers or severity of crashes occur and take corrective measures accordingly; Use of Intelligent Transport System, new Motor Vehicle Act, Licensing regime and also to promote the development of safe new infrastructure that meets the mobility and access needs through use of independent road safety audit findings in the design and other phases of new road projects. And achieving road safety through influencing vehicle safety design via deployment of improved vehicle safety technologies for both passive and active safety through a combination of relevant global standards, consumer information schemes and incentives to accelerate the uptake of new technologies.” Said Mr Kapila.
“In India road safety capability is just being developed, the best way to reduce the scale of human tragedy is through traditional road safety interventions mainly  prevention. As the basic objective of insurance systems is to compensate for losses incurred, the motor and personal injury insurance sector have a potentially key role in ameliorating the consequences of those casualties and crashes not avoided. They will also have an economic interest in the reduction of outlays, via a reduced number of casualties and crashes.” said Mr Kapila.
The experts attending the seminar will discuss legal initiatives for Road safety, road safety engineering measures, role of education in road safety, vehicle safety and trauma care and road safety an Australian prospective.
