Turmeric Crop Touches 12813 MTs In Punjab

Chandigarh, December 10, 2015: Tapping the soil fertility, farmers who shifted from paddy to turmeric cultivation in Punjab, the total production of Turmeric crop has touched 12813 MT in Punjab during the Year 2014-15. Total average yield of the crop is 17315 Kg. per hectare and total area under turmeric crop is 740 hectare in the state.
         Disclosing this here today Dr. Gurkanwal Singh Director Horticulture Department Punjab said that Turmeric is a spice that is widely used as a spice for cooking in every kitchen, one of the most basic spice without which food cannot be cooked in household. He said that there was a huge demand for turmeric seeds and farmers have procured this crop.
         He said that in S.B.S. Nagar (NawanShehar) 122 hectare area was under its cultivation and yield was 17600 Kg per hectare while production was 2147 MTs. In district Gurdaspur 120 hectare area has been covered with yield of 16875 Kg per hectare while production was 2025 MTs. Similarly, in Jalandhar 109 hectare area was under Turmeric cultivation with 17250Kg average yield per hectare and production to the tune of 1880 MTs. Hoshiarpur has 70 hectares under it with yield to the tune of 17350 Kg. per hectare and with the production of 1215 MTs. He said that Interest in Turmeric cultivation has also been shown by farmers of all districts of the state.
