Training programme for Forest Range Officers gets underway at Nauni University

A one-week training programme for Forest Range Officer trainees of Forest Training Institute and Ranger’s College, Sundernagar began this week at the Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF), Nauni.

The main objective of this training is to impart knowledge related to Tree Seed Technology, Propagation Methods, Forest Entomology, Wood identification techniques and yield assessment in forests. This training will focus on the practical aspects of Forestry and the trainees shall be given exposure to the laboratory experiments as well as field exercises. A total of 31 trainees are undergoing this training and are being accompanied by Parul Sood, Assistant Conservator of Forests.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr P K Mahajan, Dean, College of Forestry, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry. He apprised the trainees about the historical background and achievements of the College of Forestry and encouraged the trainees to make the most out of the programme.

Dr Mahajan also thanked the Himachal Forest Department for their extending their support and cooperation to B Sc (Hons) Forestry students of the College who are attached with the Forest Department for RAWE training during their final year. He also emphasized the need for strong coordination between the scientists and Forest Department so that the various technologies that are developed at the University can be transferred and implemented by the department on a large scale for the welfare of the state.

Dr Sanjeev Thakur, Professor and Head, Department of Tree Improvement and Genetic Resources, briefed the trainees regarding the training schedule and various activities that would be carried out as a part of this programme. Besides, the trainees will also be apprised of the research work being carried out at the College of Forestry.
