Ferozepur, September 3, 2015: Ferozepur traders went up in arms today against the administration’s decision to construct shops at the land where old civil hospital was situated. An auction to sell plots for the construction of shops was to be conducted by Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) today but the traders, mostly belonging to city area, led by Ashwani Mehta, President, Beopar Mandal reached there and seized the auction booth (pandal).
Ashwani Mehta said that when the civil hospital was demolished few years ago, the administration had promised that this place will be utilized for public welfare. “Just few days ago a delegation of the city traders had the Deputy Commissioner Er. DPS Kharbanda, who had assured at that time that the auction will be cancelled. But we, the traders now feel that the administration is trying to befool us”, said Aswani Mehta. While Satpal Bajaj, another trade union leader said that there is already no business in Ferozepur and small traders are having a tough time, now the administration’s decision to construct a shopping square here will destroy traders’ lives.
The situation was becoming tense and there was a possibility of a clash between the traders and police. Keeping in mind the sensitivity of the matter, the auction was postponed indefinitely.
Meanwhile few traders claimed that administration has no right over this land. “This land was donated by the residents of Ferozepur. The administration has no right over the land”, claimed one of the traders.
However, this claim was refuted by one of the senior officials in PUDA. “PUDA has all the documents and very soon the auction will take place”, the official claimed on the promise of anonymity.
