Tourism Minister Punjab To Inaugurate Rural Tourism Workshop

Chandigarh, November 26, 2015: The Tourism Minister, Punjab, Mr.Sohan Singh Thandal will inaugurate the Rural Tourism Workshop being organized by the Department of Tourism & Cultural Affairs, Government of Punjab, on  December 1, 2015 at Amritsar, informed a spokesman from the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Development Board.
This workshop is being organised under the Infrastructure Development Investment Program funded by Asian Development Bank in association with United Nations World Tourism organization, informed he.
The spokesman said that Punjab’s focus on rural tourism is a logical corollary to the National Tourism Award 2011 won by Punjab Tourism for the best Rural Tourism sitein India(Boothgarh in Hoshiarpur District, Punjab) and the formulation of UNWTO’s Ropar District Rural Tourism Cluster of four enterprising rural communities who dwell in the scenic Sutlej river basin abutting the silhouette of the Shivalik hills, within the over-arching framework of the UNWTO Tourism Master Plan for Punjab 2008-23.
He said that this workshop is aimed to bring all the stakeholders to one platform where they can exchange their experiences and draw lessons to deal with the challenges and bring meaningful solutions for implementation of rural tourism projects as well as create sustainable development practices in the rural areas.
He added that the broad objective of conducting the rural tourism workshop is to increase tourist volume and spending in rural area, to share the experience in developing and implementing the rural tourism projects, to discuss the success or failure stories so that the role models can be identified for future development of rural tourism, social and economic benefits of tourism for rural communities, involvement and participation of rural communities in the entire rural tourism development process, empowerment of women, youth and disadvantaged groups through the development of rural tourism and to create awareness among tour & travel operators regarding potential of rural tourism, tourist’s circuits, food & craft trails, in & around established tourist destinations.
The spokesman informed that the agencies implementing rural tourism projects, NGOs involved in rural tourism, freelanced researchers, writers, citizens owing rural accommodation, tour & travel hoteliers operators and other stakeholders will be participating in the workshop.
