New Delhi, July 14, 2014: The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Chennai has convicted  T.V.S.Sarma, then Engineer & Ship Surveyor-cum-Deputy Director General (Tech) of Mercantile Marine Department, Chennai and sentenced him to undergo one year Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs.4,000 in a bribery case.
CBI had registered a case against  T.V.S.Sarma, Engineer & Ship surveyor- cum- Deputy Director General (Tech) of Mercantile Marine Department, Chennai and other private persons on the allegation that the T.V.S.Sarma being In-charge of  Engineering & Ship survey examination for issuing license to professional ship surveyors had conspired with  two candidates appearing for the exam during the year 2005 and facilitated the  manipulation of the examination answer sheets by fraudulently removing those answer sheets which were in his custody.
He handed over the same to  those candidates & enabled them to erase the pencil marked portions & insert the correct answers, for  which he demanded and accepted a total bribe of Rs. 5,15,000 from the candidates through a conduit. During investigation, the two candidates and conduit turned as approvers and hence were not sent up for trial.
After the investigation of the case, CBI filed charge sheet against T.V.S.Sarma U/s 120-B r/w r/w 420, 381 IPC, section 7, 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. On completion of trial, the accused  Shri T.V.S. Sarma was convicted by the Trial Court.
