Telephone subscribers grew 1.95 percent in Q1 of 2014: TRAI

New Delhi, July 30 (IANS) The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 915.19 million at the end of December 2013 to 933.01 million at the end of March 2014, registering a growth of 1.95 percent over the previous quarter, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said here Wednesday.

This reflects year-on-year (YOY) growth of 3.90 percent over the same quarter of last year. The overall tele-density in India increased from 74.02 as on December, 2013 to 75.23 as on March, 2014.

Subscription in urban areas increased from 549.40 million at the end of December 2013 to 555.28 million at the end of March 2014. While rural subscription increased from 365.79 million to 377.73 million.

With a net addition of 18.21 million subscribers during the quarter, total wireless (GSMA+CDMA) subscriber base increased from 886.30 million at the end of December 2013 to 904.51 million at the end of March 2014, registering a growth of 2.05 percent over the previous quarter.

Total number of internet subscription has increased from 238.71 million at the end of December 2013 to 251.59 million, a quarterly growth of 5.40 percent.
