Ludhiana, June 14, 2016: The super specialist Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgeons of North Zone (Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, J & K) have formed an academic group – the Association of North Zone Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgeons (ANZCTVS). This group has come together with the aim of improving patient care ,promoting research, encouraging the discussion of difficult problems and ideas among peers and looking at ways to further improve the heart care of this region .

The 5th meeting of this group was hosted by the prestigious IGMC Shimla on 11th June 2016 . At the meeting Dr Harinder Singh Bedi – Head of Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery at the Christian Medical College & Hospital Ludhiana – and the Founder President of ANZCTVS – explained that with the meeting of like minded professionals difficult problems could be discussed so that the best possible therapy could be given to people of this zone . He emphasized on the importance of delivering International level care at reasonable cost .

Dr Gurjit Singh of JK Medicity Jammu – the incoming President who was handed over charge by Dr Bedi - said that the Association was a healthy mixture of experienced senior and young upcoming cardiac surgeons. The Association would look at ways to update everyone by organizing updates and workshops. Dr AShwani Suri – Chief Surgeon of Tagore Heart Jalandhar – elaborated on ways to reduce cost without compromising care .

Organising Chairman Dr R Pathania – Prof & Head CTVS at IGMC Shimla - told that there was a high incidence of heart disease in the region and the Association would work to not just treat heart disease but also prevent it and make people heart healthy .
Dr Rajiv Gupta of DMC Ludhiana – the dynamic Gen Secretary of the ANZCTVS - said that promoting the training of the young surgeons and encouraging their growth was of paramount importance .

Presentation of difficult and rare cases was done The surgeons elaborated that the incidence of heart disease here is among the highest in the country . This is partly due to a genetic predisposition of Punjabis to heart disease and the rich traditional fat laden diet coupled with mostly sedentary activities . Diabetes too has a high incidence – and it predisposes to severe heart disease . There is an increased incidence of heart disease in young Punjabis and also in women – which was not so earlier .

Some of the most recent advances in heart surgery – like the advent of beating heart surgery - have been pioneered in Punjab .With this Association the surgeons hope to reduce the devastating impact of heart disease on the people of this region.
