Sukhbir Badal felicitates winners of Commonwealth Games

Chandigarh, July 28, 2014: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today complemented the sports persons of India for their spectacular performance in the ongoing Commonwealth games at Glasgow and wished all success for the Indian contingent.

In a statement issued here today Badal said that out of the total 22 sports persons winning the medals as many as 4 players belonged to Punjab. He said that it was the initiative of the state government to promote sports in the state and encourage the sports persons to perform better in the sports events that has brought results.

Congratulating Abhinav Bindra, for winning gold medal in men’s shooting, ASI Navjot Chana for silver in men’s judo, 16 year old Malaika Goel silver medal in women’s shooting and Head Constable Rajwinder Kaur for bronze medal in women’s judo, Badal said that they have brought laurels to the state at international level. Bindra has already been honored by the Punjab government for his magnificent performance in Beijing Olympics in 2008.

 Deputy CM also announced that all the winners of Punjab would be honored by the state government on their return to India. Adding further he said that Punjab was the only state in the country that presents highest ever cash awards to the sports persons who have made their mark in International competitions. He said that as per the policy laid down by the state government, a cash prize of Rs. 16 Lakh would be given to the gold medalists and Rs. 11 lakh and Rs. 6 lakhs would be given to the silver and bronze medal winners respectively.
