Students to crusade for Environment: Governor

Shimla, June 5, 2017: Governor Acharya Devvrat urged students to come forward for the protection of environment and contribute in making the campaign a grand success.

The Governor was speaking today on World Environment Day function organized by State Science, Technology and Environment Council in collaboration with District Administration at historical Gaiety Theatre.

He said that over-consumption of natural resources had led to additional loss to environment. He said that the culture of benevolence should be practiced like earlier times. He urged students for the plantation on birthday and other occasions and also ensure the life of the plants.

The Governor said that the mental and spiritual pollution had emerged as a major problem in present scenario. He emphasized the need to change the mindset and contribute in the campaign against social evils. He said that everyone should come forward for the protection of environment and pledge for safeguarding the natural resources. He said that people should protect natural heritage of the state, which was the source of their livelihood. He exhorted the students to serve as ambassadors for the protection of environment in rural and urban areas.

The Governor lauded State Science, Technology and Environment Council for organizing this significant event and said that such programmes should be held throughout the year to generate awareness in the society.

The Governor re-launched the website of State Science, Technology and Environment Council. He evinced keen interest in the exhibition on environment at Gaiety Theatre.

He awarded the winners of various competitions and other meritorious students. Shri Paras Ram, a sanitary worker from Ward No. 6 of Shimla Municipal Corporation was given award for "Clean and Green Ward". On the occasion, students also presented a play on environmental protection.

Earlier Shri Tarun Kapoor, Additional Chief Secretary welcomed the Governor. He said that the students could play an important role in the protection of environment. He urged people not to over consume the natural resources, limiting the carbon-generating activities besides proper garbage management.

Shri G. S. Goraya Principal Conservator of Forests, welcomed the Governor and detailed about the various departmental activities.

Shri Kunal Satyarthi, Joint Member Secretary, State Science, Technology and Environment Council detailed about the various competitions organized on World Environment Day. As many as 500 students from 45 schools participated in various competitions.
