Driven by their resolve to help prevent train mishaps a group of four students from Mechanical Engineering (ME), Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and IT engineering, of Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) Landran have invented a unique sensor-based, fault-detection system capable to monitor, evaluate, record and relay information pertaining to the condition of railway tracks to relevant authorities who can repair the same well-in-advance, thereby preventing accidents emanating on account of track anomalies.
The contraption consists of four ultrasonic sensors embedded in the train’s engine. The data pertaining to the speed, break-pressure of the train and the temperature, will be collected by these sensors and constantly sent to a specially created control unit which will aid officials to detect any structural damage to the tracks in the form of cracks, dents etc.
The four students, Ankit Singh (ME, 7th Semester), Vijay Singh (ME, 5th Semester), Anmol Aneja (CSE, 5th Semester) and Manish Dubey (IT, 5th Semester) have got their invention patented. “Despite significant technological advancements in railway track maintenance strategies, flaws in the same account for major train derailment accidents. We hope to make a difference by enhancing the efficiency of prevailing railway safety measures through this system,” said the students.
It is worth noting that CGC Landran achieved a significant milestone earlier this year, by being ranked 7th all over India, for filing the most patents in a single year. Till date, the institution has filed 1,000-plus research papers and 200-plus patents, with more in the pipeline.
Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman, CGC Landran and Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, President CGC Landran, commended the students’ efforts and urged them to continue learning and utilizing their subject expertise for greater good of the society and the country.
